“I had worked with [Tom Hardy] on Inception and found him to be one of those actors who can draw on every aspect on his instrument, if you will. He has the ability to use every finger and toe and every eye blink to create a character. He is so physical in his approach to a performance, I thought he might be interested in the challenge of playing a character of great importance to the film from behind the mask.”
- Christopher Nolan on why he hired Tom to play Bane. Photos depicting some serious finger acting.

“Bane is like an amalgam of our fears, which makes the dehumanization via a mask so meaningful - even if it was uncomfortable to wear. With all the crises out there, many people feel vaguely threatened with extinction. For this purpose, Chris created an image of Bane - albeit an extreme picture. I was amazed at how far Chris would let me go, how uncontrollably I should be beating up Christian Bale. But Chris had a clear vision of the consequences of his finale. Bane is Batman’s last, most difficult test… He fears Bane on behalf of us all, but you can’t live without hope of sunshine - and Chris finds hope in the chaos.”

“He’s the whole package, because he has the technique, the concentration, the instincts, the heart. I hope to work with him again- but who knows whether I’ll ever get the chance again.”
- Christopher Nolan on Tom Hardy.

What I love about Bane is that I can believe in him more [than the Joker]. There’s a militaristic underpinning to him in the film which I think Tom took and ran with in his performance that I find very credible. He’s just all about power and strength.

With thanks to the generosity and talents of Echo Mute here’s a proper translation of the Taiwanese Elle article on Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises! Tom Hardy is a joy to everybody, oh yes indeed. :)
Started from a street boy, Tom Hardy, with great enthusiasm for acting, had his bad times, and a not so good marriage with his ex-wife Sarah Ward. After years of hard work in the show business, he finally got global attention with Inception. Director Christopher Nolan saw what others couldn’t see and cast him as the villain of The Dark Knight Rises, since he could see that the uninhibited Tom had a soft and vulnerable heart.
Since the Joker crashed Batman mentally in The Dark Knight, Nolan thought the villain in the third movie was supposed to attack Batman physically, yet not a brainless terrorist. When Nolan decided on Bane as the main villain, he thought of Tom Hardy. He said Bane is a monster who knows torture very well. Bane realized that the way to destroy a man is by destroying his mind, so he devastated Batman’s Gotham City to leave him full of regrets. Tom Hardy is the right one for Bane, who in private is also full ofemotions and affections, just like Tom’s personality. Nolan even described Baneas Darth Vader in Star Wars. Masked, ambitious, horrible, but rarely known as affectionate in private.
Christian Bale thinks Bane knows everything about Batman. He controls Batman’s weaknesses and plans to totally destroy him. This is unbearable for Batman who just suffered in the previous movie, but he must face the difficulty, otherwise he cannot move on. Tom put it straight-forward. He said Bane was a ambitious revolutionary, but also a man with a delicate mind. Furthermore, wearing a long coat and heavy mask in summer days was truly a nightmare. Hadn’t it been for the support of Christian Bale, he wouldn’t have made it.
However, Tom Hardy in person is a joy to everybody. Though outgoing and optimistic, he has been used to playing physically brutal and strong yet emotionally delicate roles, so he played Bane very naturally. He said the set of TDKR was like a big family. Everybody still keeps in contact with each other. Although he was absent from some promotions due to the filming of Mad Max 4, he managed to attend the NY premiere and appeared alongside everyone. When asked if he hoped to work with Nolan again, he casually answered of course, depending on whether Nolan wants him or not.

Chris Nolan talks about why he chose to work with Tom Hardy - also from Studio Ciné Live, Aug 2012. Transcribed and translated by me.
I’d seen him in Rocknrolla by Guy Ritchie, and Tom made a very strong impression on me. He was quickly established for the role of Eames in Inception. He has an astounding capability for transformation. He doesn’t intellectualise his characters, but creates a world for them, from where you can have passionate discussions when you’re a director. I was a bit nervous when I explained to Tom that he would, for the whole film, have his face covered. He created an immense, terrifying character only with his eyes and eyebrows… And also a scary physical transformation. Such actors always makes me think of what John Ford said: when he was having a problem on set, he said that the most fascinating thing in the world remained the human face.
